About WGUC

WGUC 90.9, Cincinnati's Classical Public RadioWGUC, Cincinnati's Classical Public Radio, was founded in 1960 by a group of citizens who saw the need for a radio station devoted to cultural and public affairs programming in the region. Today, the station remains committed to this heritage. WGUC broadcasts the finest in classical music programming and is the leading provider of arts information for Greater Cincinnati.

Classical Music
At 90.9 FM the power of classical music transforms ordinary experiences into extraordinary ones- every day. Favorites from classical music's masters as well as less widely known treasures from the repertoire combine to provide a rich and enlightening musical journey for WGUC's listeners. WGUC's friendly and knowledgeable program hosts relate to the music in ways that provide unique insight and added enjoyment.

In addition, many of Cincinnati's superb musical performing arts organizations can be heard on WGUC. The station is committed to making these live performances more widely available to everyone in the community.

In total, WGUC is a stimulating resource for new ideas, personal growth and world understanding.

WGUC's live signal can be heard over the Internet at www.wguc.org. Here WGUC has established a dynamic resource for its online community of classical music lovers and fans of public radio.

With an eye toward the future, WGUC is working to bring classical music to a new generation of listeners. By providing a variety of educational tools for introducing classical music to youngsters, WGUC is sowing seeds of musical enrichment that can last a lifetime.

Our History
At 4:00 pm on September 21, 1960, the University of Cincinnati's chimes rang out over 90.9 megacycles on the FM band and WGUC was born. Cincinnati's oldest and largest public radio station owes its existence to local classical music enthusiasts Daniel J. Ransohoff , Addison Lanier and Bruce Petrie Sr., who recognized the limited listening options of the area's classical music fans and spearheaded the effort to bring a fine arts and public affairs radio station to the tri-state.

WGUC has been a leader in the public radio system throughout its history. The station was one of the first in the nation to meet the Corporation for Public Broadcasting's qualification standards; a charter member of National Public Radio; and a founding member of American Public Radio (now Public Radio International). WGUC was also one of the first NPR uplinks; the producer of the first digital west-to-east transatlantic broadcast; and is the only public radio station with an ongoing music commissioning program.

In 2003, WGUC was the first public radio station in Ohio to broadcast an HD Radio™ signal and now broadcasts classical music on WGUC HD1 and jazz on WGUC HD2. And in 2006 WGUC became the first station in America to broadcast in Surround Sound.

The future is now upon us. We are counting on you to join with us as we face the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead in this digital age. Thank you for supporting classical music programming on WGUC 90.9 FM; your continued commitment protects the quality of the music that you enjoy and rely upon every day.
