Boston was a hotbed for American composers in the late 1800s. John Knowles Paine, Amy Beach, Edward MacDowell and others were among the first American composers to get not only national but international recognition. Also in that group was a fellow who started out studying business at Harvard before chunking it all to pursue the muse of music. His name was Arthur Foote. He was the only member of the group of composers known as the Boston Classicists to have trained exclusively in America. All the others had studied in Europe.
