An Expression of the CommunityAn Expression of the Community
Cincinnati Public Schools' Legacy of Art and Architecture
Photographs by Robert Flischel
Essays by Anita Ellis and Walter Langsam

Over the past thirteen years, Robert A. Flischel has been photographing the art and architecture of Cincinnati Public Schools' 45 oldest buildings. His photos are represented in An Expression of the Community: Cincinnati Public Schools' Legacy of Art and Architecture. Flischel's images are complemented by essays from architectural historian Walter E. Langsam and Cincinnati Art Museum curator Anita J. Ellis. They offer valuable insight into the rare works of art and architecture that can be found in Cincinnati Public Schools.

The story behind the art is just as interesting as the works themselves. In fact, many of the objects if Flischel's viewfinder are gifts of The Art League, an organization composed of thousands of Cincinnati Public School children who donated penny after penny, year after year, to purchase art for their schools. The Art League was formed in 1903 but unfortunately disbanded in 1974. Thankfully, it was resurrected in 1995 and has been on a mission since: to document, preserve, restore and enhance the legacy of art in Cincinnati Public Schools.

An Expression of the Community is a major step toward actualizing that goal. For the images displayed within these pages are nothing less than a lovely visual chronicle of 19th and 20th century art, ornamentation and architecture in the Cincinnati Public Schools.

An Expression of the Community is available at Joseph Beth Booksellers; Barnes and Noble, Ohio Bookstore. All proceeds from the sale of the book benefit to The Art League.
